'Flip Side' originally appeared for a very brief period as a download a few years ago to promote two of Michael Neil's other albums. It is very much a "sketch pad" of ideas, but don't read into that any thoughts of half-completed pieces. Every track is fully formed and superb in its own right, and in a way this is a unique Michael Neil album filled with varying styles and approaches. Some will be instantly recognisable to MN fans, other styles may induce thoughts of "wow - I've never heard him do anything like this before!" - filmic, strident, symphonic, atmospheric - there's even sequencing on some tracks!
Among others you can hear shades of Eno and Vangelis, and the fact that this release in now supplemented by 4 superb previously unreleased tracks, it adds further lustre and makes this an essential purchase for Michael's many fans. (Graham Getty)
